In the world of paper and stationery, the options are truly endless. When it came time for me to search for my own wedding invitation suite, I was faced with about 10 too many options. Should I go whimsical? Preppy? Or should I stay true to myself and my wedding’s overall vibe and pick a minimalist, modern wedding invitation? Dear reader, I went the chic, minimalist route, and I couldn’t be happier with my choice.
The Best Minimalist Wedding Invitations at a Glance
Here’s the thing about modern wedding invitations. You can spend hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars with an artist creating a completely custom design, close the envelope with a pricey wax seal, and splurge on metallic foil lettering. It will be gorgeous and a perfect reflection of your style, but guess what? After spending a few months hanging on your guests’ fridge, that beautifully thought-out, personalized wedding invite will end up in the trash, just like any other.
The more I thought about my own wedding invitations, the more I realized they didn’t need to be especially over the top. Plus, that’s just not my style anyway. I wanted my wedding invitations to have the same sleek simplicity that I’m looking for in my wedding gown—plus, I’d rather splurge on the event itself, not the invites.
What to Look for in Minimalist, Modern Wedding Invitations
So, what makes a truly great minimalist, modern wedding invitation? It comes down to a simple font, symmetrical spacing, and little to no embellishment. That said, minimalist doesn’t mean boring. Here are a few things to consider when shopping for minimalist wedding invitations online.
Design
When shopping for minimalist wedding invitations online, the design is the most important thing to look at. Chris Neubauer, the founder and owner of event branding firm Yonder Design, says to consider options such as monochromatic designs, sans-serif typography, and two-tone details. Sans-serif typography can also make an impact. “Simple typefaces also keep guest experience in mind, ensuring that all logistical details for your special day are legible and easy to follow,” Neubauer notes. “Accent them with your own digitized handwriting for a touch of personalization.”
In addition to these key factors, Neubauer says to embrace negative space for a “light and airy feel” and consider simplicity with a twist. “Introduce one striking detail like a vellum overlay, a minimalist wax seal, or a single delicate illustration.”
Fonts
Coupled with design, fonts play a key role in achieving a minimalist look. With that in mind, Neubauer says to use clean, sans-serif fonts or refined serif fonts and limit your design to one or two font styles for consistency. “Script fonts or ornate calligraphy can feel too busy when overused.”
Colors
Just because you want a minimalist wedding invite doesn’t mean you have to skip the color. Color is a fun way to add interest to a design while still keeping it sleek and minimal. If you’re going with a colorful wedding invitation, Neubauer says to avoid bright colors and stick with neutral or muted palettes. “Neon or overly vibrant tones can overwhelm the minimalist vibe.”
Paper
“The tactile quality of your invitation plays a vital role in achieving a minimalist yet luxurious feel,” says Neubauer. “To elevate your design, consider surprising and unique materials.” These include cotton, handmade paper, vellum, and matte stock. Neubauer also recommends alternative textures. “Explore materials like translucent acrylic, sustainable wood veneers, or even metal accents to bring a surprising, modern twist to minimalist invitations.”
Tips for Buying Wedding Invitations Online
On top of these design details, there are a few things to note about shopping for wedding invites online, regardless of your style.
Order Samples
If possible, order samples of your wedding invites. “Seeing a design on a screen is one thing, holding it in your hands is another,” says Molly Park, the chief product officer at Papier. “Before you commit to an order, it’s important to feel your chosen designs,” she adds, noting that you should also double and triple-check for spelling errors on your sample.
Practical Details
Wedding invitations are all about the details but you also want to approach things from a place of practicality. “Yes, you want a design to look amazing, but make sure there’s space for the important bits, too, like RSVP information, accommodation details, and even a line for your registry,” Park notes.
Budget for Extras
Wedding invitations can get expensive, even if you prefer a minimalist design. “My advice is to make sure you budget for all of the extras,” says Park. This includes things like envelopes, RSVP cards, and additional info cards, which Park says are all part of the experience. “Keep them in mind when planning your wedding stationery budget to avoid any surprises later.”
