THE PALETTE

Sartorial hues of purplish gray with pops of olive and taupe make up the palette in one direction, with juicy jewel tones radiating from another, soft peach Venetian plaster laced with metallic shimmer in the once-rustic dining room, and creamy neutrals in the bedrooms that speak to the sandy shoreline just steps away. “The palette is rich and unexpected—saturated jewel tones, moody neutrals, and opulent textures all working in harmony,” Hartmann says. “Even the neutrals have depth and luster. The use of metallics, velvets and tactile wallcoverings brought a sense of drama and refinement. Every room tells its own story, yet there’s a cohesive thread of elegance throughout the home.”

THE PROJECT

Having completed major renovations in previous years, the design firm was intimately familiar with all 12,828 square feet of the house: the two powder baths, the five ensuite guest bedrooms, the guest cabana, and the full basement with a gym, spa, its own powder bath, a wine cellar and the staff lounge with a full bath. They enlisted Robert Burrage of RWB Construction Management (rwbdesignbuildlive.com) to help reimagine some areas completely and thoughtfully upgrade finishes in others. In the primary suite, the most significant transformation took place, as it was previously ultra-rustic and had a compartmentalized layout.

“Our clients wanted to open it all up to flow much better than originally executed,” Hartmann says. “For example, both his and hers closets were opened up, the entryway into the primary suite was completely opened up, and we revamped the original exterior balcony, which had previously been enclosed. The primary bathroom also got a complete face-lift, with new finishes and fixtures. The client really wanted that to be a glamorous space.” Though repurposed from the original design, the tub in this bathroom now sits elevated on a platform so the client can gaze at the ocean while bathing—another precious view.

THE OUTCOME

But while the eye candy abounds inside and out, the designers’ mantra remained steadfast: nothing should feel too precious. “My goal is always for clients to feel completely at ease,” Hartmann says. “Luxury, to me, is about comfort and beauty coexisting.” As the couple’s winter residence, the house needed to equally accommodate their children, grandchildren, formal dinners, and quiet time with their two chocolate labs. Throughout, the team designed moments around the homeowners’ impressive art collection, including pieces from the early years of their marriage—again mixing precious with personal meaning and livability. As it turns out, the third time really is a charm.
